Easy Tips to Prevent and Treat “Maskne” with Timeless Skin!

While it is important to always wear a mask over your face, it is also your duty to protect your skin beneath it!

The term “maskne” was coined to describe the acne breakouts people have been getting due to wearing face masks. The breakouts are caused by heat, friction, and pressure of the masks which cause skin irritation. Due to the heat and humidity of these masks, our pores become clogged from sweat, oil, and bacteria. Depending on the material of the mask, the outer layer of the skin can become damaged and vulnerable to infection.

PREVENTING MASKNE

First, you want to make sure you are putting the best quality mask on your face. You don’t want a mask that is harsh on your skin or uncomfortable. Masks, such as the N95 or any type of surgical/medical mask, are best for single-use only. Reusing those types of masks proves to be ineffective and is terrible for your skin. Cloth masks can be washed and reused, however, they have been linked to the cause of many cases of maskne.

Second, you have to keep your mask clean. Make sure to wash your hands before applying the mask and do not touch it once it is on your face. After removing the mask, immediately wash your hands. If you are using a cloth mask, you should regularly wash it with hot water and soap and air dry it for the best results.

Cloth face masks should be left to air dry.

TREATING MASKNE

If you managed to get a maskne breakout, here are some steps to treat it.

First, do not over-exfoliate your face. This can damage your skin, removing it’s natural moisture barrier from the surface and leading to an increase in oil production. Instead, use a gel cleanser with AHA’s, which are more gentle.

Second, you should use serums to smooth the skin and prevent future breakouts. Timeless Skin’s Vitamin B5 serum and Coenzyme Q10 serum are perfect for that. The Vitamin B5 serum is known to heal and regulate oil production which will soothe any inflammation of the skin. Meanwhile, the COenzyme Q10 serum is a powerful antioxidant that energizes the skin while building up collagen and elastin.

Lastly, you should use a daily moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid in it. Timeless Skin’s HA Matrixyl 3000 Spray is a refreshing spray that re-hydrates those skin cells, protecting the natural lipid barriers and the skin from any type of damage. This spray is infused with aloe and natural plant extracts, and also comes in a variety of scents. We recommend using the Cucumber or Lavender sprays, which are popular choices for the Spring and Fall seasons.
