Why Every MUA Should be on YOUTUBE

Who wants to be a Youtuber??

Youtube is the video-sharing platform created in 2006. Since then it has blown up and is now a huge platform creating a following and a community of loyal fans. Michelle Phan was the very first beauty Youtuber back in 2007 who knew she would be considered one of the founders of the community. If you don’t know who James Charles, Jeffree Starr, Nikki Tutorials, or Tati Westbrook, you must be living under a rock. Youtube is the place to find anything with easy how to videos, portfolios, music videos, and everything else you could possibly think of. It’s easy, free to use, and has access to a large fan base/ clients. So if that enough doesn’t conceive you to start filming your daily makeup routine then here are a few more reasons to get started NOW

To Build a Community

The Beauty community on Youtube is a large growing community of over 50 million people tuning in every month to watch all types of channels. Youtube is a place to get questions, answered and that does include your beauty questions. As a makeup artist, you have knowledge about beauty tips and tricks the public is dying to know. Anyone interested in beauty would love to know how to make themselves look better, get their makeup to stay longer or hide their imperfections. You as a makeup artist, have those answers. You should share those tricks with the public. You can build your own community of beauty lovers with the same interest as you. This is how you create a community. Youtube viewers are more than audience members and potential clients, they can become your community. This community will engage with you; follow you on Instagram, like your page on Facebook, respond to live Instagram. This is your community!

Create a Client and Fan Base

Youtube is also the place to develop a relationship with your clients. You can use your platform to show your community what skills you have. This in turn will build you a client base. Those local, or even not local will love to find out that you are actually a makeup artist. Most of the big beauty YouTubers have stopped taking “clients”, (if they were even makeup artists). A bride finding their makeup artist on Youtube or Instagram allows them to develop a relationship with them beyond the typical MUA- Client relationship. They are your fan before you even do their makeup. A fan and client you probably would not have had if you were not on Youtube developing that fan base.

Further Your Career

Be honest, haven’t you ever imagined what it would be like to have your own makeup brand, get a PR package, or collaborate with a major beauty brand on a collection with your name on it? Youtube is your chance to do that! Brands love to have honest opinions about their products and let’s be honest everyone loves to get free things. Creating these relationships with brands means that people trust your opinion. This won’t happen overnight but there is potential for it to happen all you have to do is start making videos and build a following.

Build Your Portfolio

Youtube is also a great place to show your skills and talents. It’s a digital portfolio right at the fingertips of your potential customers. Anyone can see your work through your videos. You could even show your audience how it is done. It is through this that your portfolio is built. Talk to your audience about your favorite looks to create, your least favorite looks to create, your favorite memory as a MUA, your least favorite memory. This is your chance to show your audience what you can do. You can also find your niche and hopefully start a trend.

Recording device

To start your Youtube career, you don’t need the nicest camera. Nowadays you can literally just use your phone. If you have an iPhone X or newer, you have a high-quality camera. Get yourself a tripod or just set your phone up on some books and start recording. If you really want a camera a great staple camera is the Canon EOS REBAL T7i or T8i. It’s a camera that everyone has been using for years and definitely worth checking out. However, it can be pricey so unless you have the funds use your phone camera. No one will know the difference for now.

Lightening

Lightning is one of the most important aspects of your youtube video. But that doesn’t mean it has to be difficult. Natural light is the best light you could possibly get. Have a large window in your house? Setup your camera right in front of it. Your recording time will revolve around the sun but to start out, it’s the cheapest and easiest way to get the best quality videos. In the future, if you want artificial lighting you will have to buy a ring light.
